Post Op Bra Sizing Guide:

Extra Tips for Better Results!

Wow! The time has finally come to order your surgical bras in time for your procedure. This is an exciting time, but it can be quite daunting as well.

Having been in the business of fitting patients with compression garments, including surgical bras for all types of breast surgery for many years, let us show you just how easy it is.

Tip 1: Talk to Your Surgeon

First and foremost, you need to find out from your Surgeon what type of bras after surgery he or she recommends.

No matter whether you are having your procedure in Australia or overseas, most Surgeons will have a preference: Soft & comfy or Surgical grade fabric (more supportive).

In my experience, I have come across all of the above.

Tip 2: Front-Fastening Works Best

No matter which type of bras after surgery your Surgeon prefers (if any), it is really sensible to have a front fastening bra.

Easier for you to put on and take-off, and easy for the nursing staff to check your wounds. So, after deciding on the style you now have to choose the size. That’s where this handy post-op bra sizing guide comes in to help make the process easier.

Tip 3: Know Your Measurements

Not all bras are sized the same: Small, medium…32D, 34E…

For those soft, comfy bras sized small, medium, etc, you will only need your under-bust measurement. For surgical grade fabric bras (Marena Brand) you will need to have an idea of what cup size you are hoping for. Usually, you will have discussed this with your surgeon.

For all bras after surgery, you need your under-bust measurement (where your bra band normally sits). This measurement is best taken without a bra on. Don’t pull the tape tight – just comfortable around your body. Be careful not to let the tape droop at the back.

It can be a good idea to have someone else do this for you, or if this is not possible try standing in front of a mirror to make things a little easier.

Tip 4: Consult Our Size Charts

Once you have this measurement in centimetres, consult the online chart for your preferred bra to determine the size.

Bodyment size charts can be found below the product. Just click on the “Size Charts” tab.

Do remember that you will have swelling post-surgery and that most of these bras are made overseas to suit a wide variety of body shapes. So, always go bigger in the band than smaller if you are at the upper end of the scale.

This rule applies to all “comfort” soft cup non-compression bras. For our Marena surgical compression bras, most have three rows of hooks and eyes at the front so they are really adjustable to accommodate your swelling.

They are, however, slightly small in the cup. So if you are hoping for a D cup and you measure in the middle of band size 36, then select an E cup bra. If you are planning for a full E cup size (or bigger) it is wise to choose the next band size up in an E cup.

For example, if your under-bust measures 83cm and you are hoping for D or bigger – choose large (38E).

Tip 5: Get Dressed Carefully

When wearing bras after surgery, pop your arms through and pull the bra down at the back first and then around to the front. This will ensure the back of the bra is sitting properly and you will have some extra room to do the bra up at the front.

Do it up from the bottom up and adjust the shoulder straps if necessary. The bra band should sit quite low and be flat around your rib cage. We don’t want the bra riding up onto your incision.

Then adjust the cups of the bra so they are covering as much of your breasts as possible. The top should sit quite high so it doesn’t cause a bulge on your breasts.

Bonus Tips to Aid Your Recovery

  • After breast surgery of any type, your breasts are likely to feel firm and hot. This is the case with or without a bra on.
  • Wearing a quality post-surgical bra will help you feel secure in the weeks following the procedure.
  • Bodyment recommends buying two bras, one to wear and one to wash, as you will be wearing bras after surgery 24/7 for about 6 weeks.
  • Always follow the washing instructions on the packaging to keep your garments in good condition.
  • Once your wounds have healed, use BodySil scar treatment tape to reduce the redness and lumpiness of your scars. BodySil is reusable for up to 10 days and is an excellent value!
